Dans les <strong data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1035\">Theaters<\/strong>, il photographie des salles de cin\u00e9ma en laissant l\u2019obturateur ouvert pendant toute la dur\u00e9e du film. L\u2019\u00e9cran devient alors une surface blanche, satur\u00e9e de lumi\u00e8re, tandis que l\u2019espace autour conserve sa mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9. Ce que l\u2019image donne \u00e0 voir, ce n\u2019est plus un film, mais le temps du film.<\/p><p data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1574\">Cette mani\u00e8re de travailler traverse toute son \u0153uvre. Sugimoto ne cherche pas \u00e0 saisir l\u2019instant. Il \u00e9tire la dur\u00e9e, la condense, la transforme en image. La photographie devient un outil pour penser le temps autant que pour repr\u00e9senter le monde.<\/p><p data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1916\">L\u2019exposition pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au mus\u00e9e Soulages rassemble plusieurs de ses grandes s\u00e9ries \u2014 <strong data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"1674\">Seascapes<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1692\">Opera Houses<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1708\">Pine Trees<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1710\" data-end=\"1721\">Opticks<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1744\">Brush Impressions<\/strong> \u2014 couvrant plusieurs d\u00e9cennies de cr\u00e9ation. Elle ne propose pas un r\u00e9cit chronologique, mais une circulation. Depuis plus de quarante ans, Sugimoto photographie des mers \u00e0 travers le monde selon un principe immuable : une ligne d\u2019horizon parfaitement centr\u00e9e, s\u00e9parant le ciel et l\u2019eau.<\/p><p data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"924\">\u00c0 premi\u00e8re vue, les images se ressemblent. Puis, \u00e0 mesure que le regard s\u2019attarde, les diff\u00e9rences apparaissent. Variations de lumi\u00e8re, densit\u00e9 de l\u2019air, mouvement de la mer. Il ne peut plus s\u2019appuyer sur un sujet identifiable ou une narration. Il doit simplement regarder.<\/p><p data-start=\"2796\" data-end=\"2953\">Ce d\u00e9placement est essentiel. Il transforme la photographie en exp\u00e9rience. L\u2019image ne livre pas imm\u00e9diatement son sens ; elle demande du temps. Elle r\u00e9siste.<\/p><p data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3227\">C\u2019est l\u00e0 que le travail de Sugimoto rejoint d\u2019autres formes artistiques. On pense \u00e0 certaines peintures de Mark Rothko, o\u00f9 la couleur ne repr\u00e9sente rien mais cr\u00e9e un espace mental. On pense aussi \u00e0 la tradition japonaise, \u00e0 cette mani\u00e8re de sugg\u00e9rer plut\u00f4t que de montrer.<\/p><p data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3479\">Le titre de l\u2019exposition, <em data-start=\"3255\" data-end=\"3277\">Reprendre la m\u00e9lodie<\/em>, renvoie d\u2019ailleurs \u00e0 une notion japonaise \u2014 <em data-start=\"3323\" data-end=\"3335\">honka-dori<\/em> \u2014 qui consiste \u00e0 reprendre une \u0153uvre ancienne pour en proposer une nouvelle interpr\u00e9tation. Sugimoto ne copie pas : il prolonge, il transforme.<\/p><p data-start=\"3481\" data-end=\"3733\">Dans la s\u00e9rie <strong data-start=\"3495\" data-end=\"3509\">Pine Trees<\/strong>, inspir\u00e9e de paravents du XVIe si\u00e8cle, ou dans ses travaux r\u00e9cents m\u00ealant photographie et calligraphie, cette id\u00e9e de reprise devient centrale. L\u2019image n\u2019est jamais isol\u00e9e. La sc\u00e9nographie, volontairement sobre, laisse de l\u2019espace aux \u0153uvres. Peu de textes, peu d\u2019effets. Une respiration.<\/p><p data-start=\"3997\" data-end=\"4177\">Ce choix est coh\u00e9rent. Il prolonge le travail de Sugimoto, qui consiste pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 \u00e9liminer le superflu. Le visiteur est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 prendre son temps, \u00e0 revenir, \u00e0 douter parfois.<\/p><p data-start=\"4179\" data-end=\"4438\">Dans le contexte du bicentenaire de la photographie, cette exposition prend une r\u00e9sonance particuli\u00e8re. Deux si\u00e8cles apr\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res images de Ni\u00e9pce, la photographie est partout, instantan\u00e9e, continue. Elle se consomme souvent plus qu\u2019elle ne se regarde.<\/p><p data-start=\"4440\" data-end=\"4570\">Sugimoto propose autre chose. Une forme de r\u00e9sistance tranquille. Le dialogue avec l\u2019\u0153uvre de Pierre Soulages, autour de la lumi\u00e8re et du temps, s\u2019impose sans forcer. Les deux artistes partagent une m\u00eame attention \u00e0 ce qui \u00e9chappe au regard imm\u00e9diat.<\/p><p data-start=\"4905\" data-end=\"4988\">Ce n\u2019est pas une exposition spectaculaire.
